Your options for comfort

Every procedure at Aspen Oral Surgery starts with local anesthesia to numb the surgical area. Depending on the procedure, your health and how anxious you feel, you can add IV sedation or general anesthesia.

Your surgeon reviews your health history at your consultation and recommends the safest option for you.

What each option means:

‍

  • Local anesthesia – you're awake and the area is completely numb.
  • IV sedation – medication through a small IV in your arm. You're relaxed and drowsy, and most patients remember little of the procedure.
  • General anesthesia – you're fully asleep, cared for by an anesthesiologist.
  • Monitoring – heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen are watched throughout, and you rest until you're ready to go home.

General anesthesia and deep sedation are provided in our office by an anesthesiologist, supported by our registered nurses.

Which option is right for you?

  • Local anesthesia – suits simpler extractions and short procedures when you feel calm.
  • IV sedation – a common choice for wisdom teeth and implant surgery, especially if you feel anxious.
  • General anesthesia – for longer or more complex surgery, or when you'd prefer to be fully asleep.
  • Your health history – some medical conditions change which option is safest. Your surgeon reviews this with you at your consultation.

Is sedation safe?

Sedation and general anesthesia are very safe when a trained team provides them with the right monitoring. Your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen are watched throughout your procedure, and Dr. Cloutier is certified in advanced cardiac, trauma and pediatric life support.

For your safety, you must not eat or drink for 8 hours before surgery, and a responsible adult must stay in the office and take you home. Our pre-operative instructions explain the details.
